Behind the bottle
“Offering a bouquet of cherries, raspberries, woodsmoke and rich soil tones, the 2018 Domaine-Thomson Bourgogne Rouge is medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with fine-grained but youthfully chalky tannins, a ripe core of fruit and a flavourful finish.”
Mellecey, les Entrevaux by PM
The village of Mellecey lies to the south east of Mercurey, which is one of the best known red wine villages in the Côte Châlonnaise. The Côte Châlonnaise starts where the Côte de Beaune comes to an end, however, it is in a different département of Burgundy, which is the Saône-et-Loire.
In terms of getting there, it is some distance from Gevrey-Chambertin, but the drive as ever, is very beautiful, assuming one avoids the autoroute. The road winds through historic villages and well known vineyards. Perhaps it is my imagination but I have the impression that the Soane-et-Loire is a rolling green country, the green fields are flecked with white Charolais cattle, and fringed with old oaks. This is the land of plenty, with a rich opulent cuisine, such as Bresse chicken cooked in cream and served with pancakes, which is marvellous, cooked in cream and accompanied by Pinot Noir. There is also the famous fish stew called Pochouse, made from fresh water white fish cooked in Pinot Noir.
The vines in Mellecey lie to the south of the village. They can be seen from our other vines in Mercurey. The lieu-dit is les Entrevaux. The vines are planted in the direction of north-west to south-east and are oriented in the direction of south-east, with good sun.
Wine from this parcel is blended into the Bourgogne Rouge wine made by Armand.
